Summer is the perfect season for DIY painting projects. A little exterior paint on your home or wood stain on the deck increases your curb appeal and beautifies your home. These products create barriers between the valuable and vulnerable wood underneath and the worst that Mother Nature has to offer all winter long. Before you grab a brush, see what you need to know about summertime painting.
How Does the Outside Temperature Affect Exterior Paint?
If the pavement is hot enough to fry an egg outside, then it might be wise to put off your DIY project for another day when the temperature is more favorable. Generally oil based paints can be applied when the temperature is between 40° and 90° Fahrenheit and latex products when the temperature is between 50° and 85° Fahrenheit. While these are general recommendations, you should check the paint label for the manufacturer's temperature recommendations. Applying paint, when the temperatures exceed recommendations, will affect the amount of time needed by the paint to properly cure after application. Paint that doesn't properly cure can quickly crack, blister, or peel which will ruin your hard work and waste money. Keep in mind that surfaces in the direct sun will have a higher temperature than the surrounding air.
Does Moisture Affect My Painting and Staining Projects?
Along with temperature, humidity plays a critical role in the chemical reactions that occur when paint or stain is applied. Obviously these products should not be applied to a surface that is still damp with moisture such as dew or rainwater. The humidity in the air should be between 40 and 70 percent for optimal drying. Higher humidity will prevent the products from drying as the manufacturer intended leaving you with an unattractive and uneven finish.
